Level1:Reaction Thefirstlevelofcriteriais“reaction,”whichmeasureswhetherlearnersfindthetrainingengaging,favorable,andrelevanttotheirjobs.Thislevelismostcommonlyassessedbyanafter-trainingsurvey(oftenreferredtoasa“smilesheet”)thatasksstudentstoratetheirexperience. AcrucialcomponentofLevel1analysisisafocusonthelearnerversusthetrainer.Whileitmayfeelnaturalforafacilitatortofixateonthetrainingoutcome(suchascontentorlearningenvironment),theKirkpatrickModelencouragessurveyquestionsthatconcentrateonthelearner’stakeaways. Level2:Learning Level2gaugesthelearningofeachparticipantbasedonwhetherlearnersacquiretheintendedknowledge,skills,attitude,confidenceandcommitmenttothetraining.Learningcanbeevaluatedthroughbothformalandinformalmethods,andshouldbeevaluatedthroughpre-learningandpost-learningassessmentstoidentifyaccuracyandcomprehension. Methodsofassessmentincludeexamsorinterview-styleevaluations.Adefined,clearscoringprocessmustbedeterminedinadvancetoreduceinconsistencies. Level3:Behavior OneofthemostcrucialstepsintheKirkpatrickModel,Level3measureswhetherparticipantsweretrulyimpactedbythelearningandifthey’reapplyingwhattheylearn.Assessingbehavioralchangesmakesitpossibletoknownotonlywhethertheskillswereunderstood,butifit'slogisticallypossibletousetheskillsintheworkplace. Oftentimes,evaluatingbehavioruncoversissueswithintheworkplace.Alackofbehavioralchangemaynotmeantrainingwasineffective,butthattheorganization’scurrentprocessesandculturalconditionsaren’tfosteringanideallearningenvironmentforthedesiredchange.  Level4:Results Thefinallevel,Level4,isdedicatedtomeasuringdirectresults.LevelFourmeasuresthelearningagainstanorganization'sbusinessoutcomes—theKeyPerformanceIndicatorsthatwereestablishedbeforelearningwasinitiated.CommonKPI’sincludehigherreturnoninvestments,lessworkplaceaccidents,andlargerquantityofsales. UsingtheKirkpatrickModelcreatesanactionablemeasurementplantoclearlydefinegoals,measureresultsandidentifyareasofnotableimpact.Analyzingdataateachlevelallowsorganizationstoevaluatetherelationshipbetweeneachleveltobetterunderstandthetrainingresults—and,asanaddedbenefit,allowsorganizationstoreadjustplansandcorrectcoursethroughoutthelearningprocess.
