Thethalamusisasmallstructurewithinthebrainlocatedjustabovethebrainstembetweenthecerebralcortexandthemidbrainandhasextensivenerveconnectionstoboth.Theprimaryfunctionofthethalamusistorelaymotorandsensorysignalstothecerebralcortex.Italsoregulatessleep,alertness,andwakefulness.

Thebrainiscomprisedofventriclesorfluid-filledspaces.Thethalamussurroundsthethirdventricle.Itisasubdivisionofpartofthebraincalledthediencephalonandisoneofthelargeststructuresderivedfromthediencephalonduringembryonicdevelopment.

Withinthethalamusliemyelinatednervefiberscalledlamellaethatseparatethestructureintoindividualparts.Distinctgroupsofneuronsmakeupotherpartssuchastheperiventricular,thenucleuslimitans,andtheintralaminarelementscollectivelycalledtheallothalamus.Theallothalamusdiffersinstructureformthemajorpartofthethalamuscalledtheisothalamus.
