TheNatchezTracebridge OneofthemostrevolutionaryarchbridgesinrecentyearsistheNatchezTrace BridgeinFranklin,Tennessee,whichwasopenedtotrafficin1994.It'sthe firstAmericanarchbridgetobeconstructedfromsegmentsofpre-cast concrete,ahighlyeconomicalmaterial.Twogracefularchessupportthe roadwayabove.Usuallyarchbridgesemployverticalsupportscalled "spandrels"todistributetheweightoftheroadwaytothearchbelow,butthe NatchezTraceBridgewasdesignedwithoutspandrelstocreateamoreopenand aestheticallypleasingappearance.Asaresult,mostoftheliveload isrestingonthecrownsofthetwoarches,whichhavebeenslightlyflattened tobettercarryit.Alreadythewinnerofmanyawards,thebridgeisexpected toinfluencebridgedesignforyearstocome.
