Archbridgeshavebeenwidelyusedaroundtheworldbecauseoftheiruniqueaesthetics,andareusedforlong-spanbridgesaftersuspensionandcable-stayedbridges. Fig.Archbridge(SydneyHarbourBridge) Thestructuralpropertiesofarchesvarydependingontheshapeofthearchesandthenumberofhingers.Ingeneral,archesbecomestrongerasthenumberofhingesdecreases;however,itgreatlyimpactssettlement. 2.MainComponentsofArchBridge Themaincomponentsofarchbridgesare: Deckarchbridge Archrib Abutments/Supports HangersandSpandrels Archbridgesareconsideredoneoftheoldesttypesofbridges.Forexample,theMycenaeanbridge,whichwasbuiltaround1600BC,wasconsideredtheoldestCorbelarchbridgetoeverbebuilt.inthiscontent,however,onlymodernarchbridgesandtheircomponentswillbereviewed. Fig.TheMycenaeanbridge Forarchbridges,thearchservesasthemainstructuralmemberthatcarriestheloadsdirectlytotheabutmentsorsupportsascompressiveforces.Furthermore,bendingmomentsandshearforcesaresmallcomparedtogirderbridges,makingitamoreeconomicalchoice.Therearethreemaintypesofarchbridgesbeingbuiltnowadays:deckarchbridges,througharchbridges,andtied-archorbowstringarchbridges.Indeckarchbridges,thedeckliesontopofthearchrib.Thedeckcanbesupportedbyspandrelsmadeofanumberofverticalcolumns(open-spandreldeckarchbridge)orbysolidspandrelwalls(closed-spandreldeckarchbridge).Furthermore,whenthetopofthearchribdirectlysupportsthedeck,itisalsoknownasacathedralarchbridge.Inthrougharchbridges,thedeckliesbelowthearchstructureandissupportedbyverticalhangers.Furthermore,thearchribissupportedbytheabutments/supportsateachend.Lastly,intied-archbridges,theendsofthearchribareconnectedbytieswherethedeckservesastheprimarysupport.Instructuralterms,oneendofthesupportofatied-archbridgeservesasahingedwhereastheotherendofthesupportservesasaroller,allowinglongitudinalmovement. A.DeckArchBridge Fig.Deckandbridge Fig.Througharchbridge Fig.Tied-archbridge Therearevariouscomponentsthatcompromisesarchbridges,butthemaincomponentsarethefollowing: B.ArchRib Thearchribisthemainstructuralmemberofthearchandisresponsibleofcarryingthedifferentloadsgeneratedinthestructure.Thearchribsarecommonlybuiltusingreinforcedconcreteorsteel,butnewinnovativematerialshavebeenusedforthearchribs,includingconcrete-filledsteeltubular,high-performanceconcrete,steelconcretecomposites,etc.Thearchribcanbebuiltasatruss,aboxgirder,aplategirder,orasahollowsection,dependingonitsusage.Forlongspanbridges,thearchribiscomposedoftrusssectionsinordertocounterthetrafficloadingscausedbythevariousvehiclescrossingthebridge.Thearchribdoesn’tonlyrepresentthemainload-bearingelementofanarchbridge,butalsorepresentthemostaestheticcomponentofthebridge. Fig.RamstoreArchbridgeonQabanbayBatyrAve C.Abutments/Supports Theabutments/supportsareoneofthemostimportantcomponentsofarchbridgesbecausemostoftheloadscarriedbythearchribaretransmittedintotheabutments.Therefore,theabutmentsmustbeheavyandlargeenoughtocarrythehorizontalthrustfromthearch.Reinforcedconcreteandsteelarecommonmaterialsusedfortheabutments,butnewmaterialslikecellularreinforcedconcreteandmassconcreteareusedinordertoreducecosts.Forexample,incellularreinforcedconcreteabutments,thecellularportionoftheabutmentisfilledwithsoilinordertoadjustthenecessaryweightoftheabutment. Fig.AbutmentoftheBlackfriarsRailwaybridge D.Hangers(througharchbridges)andSpandrel(deckarchbridges) Dependingonthetypeofarchbridge,thedeckcanbesupportedbyspandrelsontopofthearchribofsuspendedbyverticalhangers.Fordeckarchbridges,solidspandrelwallscanbeplacedontopofthearchribtosupportthebridgedeck.Thefillonthewallsaremostlymadeoutofmasonryorconcrete.However,modernbridgesuseadifferentapproachbyaddingverticalcolumnsmadeoutofsteelorconcretethatdirectlysupportthedeckofthebridge. Forthrougharchbridges,thedeckofthebridgeissuspendedbyhangers,whichareloadedintension.ThehangerscanbedesignedasI-sections,circularhollowsections,orcablesdependingontheconditionstowhichthearchbridgeissituated.Furthermore,recentstudiesonhangerarrangementoptimizationhaveshownthatsparsehangersystemsprovideadvantagessuchasbettermechanicalperformance. ThereareothertypesofarchbridgessuchastheLangerbridge,Lohsebridge,NielsenBridge,andTiedarchbridge. A.TiedArch Thearchribrigidityisgreaterthanthatofthestiffenedgirder,sotheribmainlyresistsaxialforcesandbendingmoments.Furthermore,onlyaxialforcesaregeneratedinthestiffenedgirder.
