A genome is the complete set of genetic information in an organism. It provides all of the information the organism requires to function. Thispagehasbeenarchivedandisnolongerupdated genome Agenomeisthecompleteset ofgeneticinformationinanorganism.Itprovidesalloftheinformationthe organismrequirestofunction.Inlivingorganisms,thegenomeisstoredin longmoleculesofDNAcalledchromosomes.SmallsectionsofDNA,calledgenes, codefortheRNAandproteinmoleculesrequiredbytheorganism.Ineukaryotes, eachcell'sgenomeiscontainedwithinamembrane-boundstructurecalledthe nucleus.Prokaryotes,whichcontainnoinnermembranes,storetheirgenomeina regionofthecytoplasmcalledthenucleoid.ThefullrangeofRNAmolecules expressedbyagenomeisknownasitstranscriptome,andthefullassortmentof proteinsproducedbythegenomeiscalleditsproteome. Thereare23pairsof chromosomesinthehumangenome.Between1990and2003,alltwenty-threepairs werefullysequencedthroughaninternationalresearchundertakingknownasthe HumanGenomeProject.Thestudyandanalysisofgenomesiscalledgenomics.
