ManyyearsagoItookaclassineducationalpsychologyandcameacrossthisquotefromthecognitivepsychologist,DavidAusubel: “IfIhadtoreduceallofcognitivepsychologytooneprincipleitwouldbethis: themostimportantsinglefactorinfluencinglearningiswhatthelearneralreadyknows. Ascertainthisandteachhimaccordingly.” (1978: flyleaf). Iwasverystruckbythisandwasthereforeevenmoreinterestedtofindoutwhatcognitivepsychologyhadtosayabout‘meaningfullearning’,somethingthatwetalkaboutvaguelyinELT,butthatweperhapsdon’tclearlydefine. Cognitivepsychologysaysthatmeaningfullearningisaboutmakingconnectionsbetweenwhatlearnersalreadyknowandnewinformationthatwe’dlikelearnerstoknow. Inotherwords,weneedtohelplearnerstoactivatewhattheyalreadyknowaboutwhatwearegoingtobeteachingasnewinformation. Inthiswaywecanhelpthemtoaddthenewinformationtotheiralreadyexistingknowledgeschemesratherthanaskthemtocreatewholenewknowledgeschemes. Anotherpartofourworkistohelptoshowlearnerswhattheydon’tknowandtherebycreateacognitivedisequilibrium,whichwillleadtointrinsicmotivationorthedrivetolearn. Ithinkalotofteachersdothiswithoutthinkingaboutit,butthereareclearlystrategiesthatwecanusetohelptomakelearning‘meaningful’. Here’sasimpleexample: wearegoingtoreadatextaboutNelsonMandelaandbeforewereadthetextweshowapictureofMandelaandweasklearnerswhattheyknowabouthim. Wealsoaskthemwhatthey’dliketoknowabouthim. That’sbasicpre-reading,isn’tit,butit’salsothebasisof‘meaningfullearning’. Weshowthepicturetohelpactivatewhatlearnersalreadyknowaboutthetopic(sotheycanattachthenewknowledgetotheiralreadyexistingknowledgescheme). Weaskstudentstosaywhattheyknowalreadytomakethisexplicitandweaskthemtothinkaboutwhattheydon’tknowabouthimtocreatethecognitivedisequilibriumandthereforegivethelearnersadrivetolearn.
