Well,putsimply,asopposedtoaself-reportscaleofEI,anEItestisdevelopeddifferently.Yousee,EItestsarebasedonthepremisethatEIconsistsofagroupofskillsthatareemployedinordertosolveemotionalproblems. Therefore,asexplainedbypioneersintheresearchareaofEI,Mayer,Caruso,Salovey&Sitarenios(2003),becauseitisdevelopedfromaskill-base,thatEIis,therefore,adistinctabilitythatcanbemeasuredobjectively. WhatisanEQappraisal? AnotherwayoflookingattheassessmentofEIisanEQappraisal. OneexampleofanEQappraisalistheEmotionalIntelligenceAppraisalthatfeaturesinthebest-sellingwork‘EmotionalIntelligence2.0’(Bradberry&Su,2006). Theappraisalwascreatedin2001byDr.TravisBradberryandDr.JeanGreavesanditmaybeadministeredineitheronlineformorinabooklet.Youcanfindmoreemotionalintelligencebookshere. TheEQappraisalisaskill-basedassessmentbasedonDanielGoleman’sfour-factortaxonomy(Bradberry&Su,2006).AccordingtoGoleman,EIconsistsoffourcomponents: self-awareness, self-management, socialawarenessand relationshipmanagement. TheEQappraisalconsistsof28itemsandisperformancebased–itisdesignedtoassessthebehaviorlinkedtoEIskills.TheassessmentgivesanoverallEQscore,andascoreforeachofthefourEIfactors(Bradberry&Su,2006). ResearchwithTheEmotionalIntelligenceAppraisalhasfoundCronbachalphareliabilityratingsbetween.85and.91however,interestingly,anon-significantpositivecorrelationwasfoundbetweentheappraisalandthepopularEItest,theMayer-Salovey-CarusoEmotionalIntelligenceTest. Inthefollowingsectionsofthisarticle,youcancertainlyreadmoreabouttheMSCEIT.Briefly,however,forthepurposeofanintroductiontothisdiscussion,theMSCEITisanabilitymodelofEI. ResearchershavesuggestedthatthereisadistinctionbetweentheconstructsthataremeasuredbytheMSCEITandEIAppraisal(Bradberry&Su,2006).Itwasreasonedthatthisdifferenceinmodelsfromwhichtheassessmentsweredeveloped–theMSCEITisanability-basedassessment,whereastheEIAppraisalwasbasedonDanielGoleman’s‘mixed’modelofEI. IthasbeenclaimedthatscoresontheEmotionalIntelligenceAppraisalpredictedjobperformancemorethantheMSCEIT,andwhat’smore,italsotakesone-fifthofthelengthoftimetoadminister. TheEmotionalIntelligence2.0Test Inthissectionofthearticle,IwillbefocusingontheMayer-Salovey-CarusoEmotionalIntelligenceTest,Version2.0(MSCEIT,V2.0).TheMSCEITisa141scalethatmeasuresthefourbranchesofEI,eachbranchreflectingspecificskills–perceivingemotions,usingemotionstofacilitatethought,understandingemotionsandmanagingemotions(Mayer,Caruso,Salovey&Sitarenios,2003). Eachofthesefour‘branches’ismeasuredintheMSCEITusingtwotasks,asdescribedbelow: Branchone–perceivingemotions:facesandpicturestasks Branchtwo–facilitatingthought:sensationsandfacilitationtasks Branchthree–understandingemotions:blendsandchangestasks Branchfour–managingemotions:emotionmanagementandemotionalrelationshipstasks. Eachofthese8tasksismeasuredeitherbyadiscrete,singleitemoragroupofindividualitemsthatmakeupan‘itemparcel’(Mayeretal.,2003).Itemparcelsarecollectionsofrelateditems–so,forexample,the‘facestask’consistsoffouritemparcels,eachcontainingfiveresponses.Someitemsonlyrequireoneresponseperstimulussoaredistinctandfree-standing(Mayeretal.,2003). Acrossthe8tasks,theresponsesrequiredtakedifferentforms.Thetestwasdesignedthiswaysothattheresultsacrosstheresponsemethodscanbegeneralized,andalsominimizetheassociatederrorinmeasurement(Mayeretal.,2003).So,sometasksusea5-pointratingscale,whereasothersrequireamultiple-choiceresponse. Let’slookatthistestalittlecloser… The‘faces’taskismadeupof4itemparcels,eachwith5responses(Mayeretal.,2003).Inthistask,participantsarepresentedwithagroupoffaces,andtheyarerequiredtorespondwiththespecificemotiontheycanidentifyasportrayedintheface(Mayeretal.,2003). The‘pictures’taskconsistsofsixparcelseachwith5responses.Itissimilartothe‘faces’task,exceptthatthetargetstimuliareabstractdesignsandlandscapes,andtorespond,participantsselectfromcartoonfacesthatshowspecificemotions(Mayeretal.,2003). The‘sensations’taskconsistsoffiveparcels,eachwiththreeresponses.Participantsmatchsensationstotheemotionstheygenerate–e.g.describinghow‘hot’or‘cold’afeelingofenvyis(Mayeretal.,2003). The‘facilitation’taskismadeupof5itemparcels,eachwiththreeresponses.Thistaskrequiresadecisionaboutthemoodsthataremostcloselyassociatedwithspecificbehaviorsandcognitivetasks,intermsofaccompanyingthemorassistingthem.TheexamplegivenbyMayer,Caruso,Salovey,andSitanerios(2003)is“whetherjoymayassistplanningaparty”(p.99). The‘blends’taskconsistsof12free-standingitems.Responderschoosewhichemotionscouldbecombinedtoproduceanotheremotion–forexample,thatmalicecouldbeformedbycombiningenvyandaggression(Mayeretal.,2003). The‘changes’taskismadeupof20free-standingitemsinwhichindividualschoosetheemotionthatemergesduetoanotheremotionintensifying–e.g.thatdepressionismostlikelytoresultfromintensificationofsadnessandfatigue(Mayeretal.,2003). The‘emotionmanagement’taskconsistsof5parcels,eachwith4responses.Inthistask,respondersarerequiredtoformajudgmentaboutthebestactionsthatcanbetakenbyanindividualinastoryinordertoresultinthespecifiedemotionaloutcome(Mayeretal.,2003). So,forexample,theparticipantmightreadastoryaboutacharacterandneedtoidentifywhatthischaractercandotoreducetheirangerorprolongjoy(Mayeretal.,2003). Finally,the‘emotionalrelationship’task.Thistaskismadeupof3itemparcels,eachwith3responses.Thistaskrequirestest-takerstodecidewhatarethemosteffectiveactionsanindividualcantakeinordertomanageanotherperson’sfeelings(Mayeretal.,2003). Puttingthisalltogether,itcanbeseenthattheMSCEIT2.0isacomprehensivetestofEI.Infact,itrequiresatotalof705responses–141itemsareincluded,eachwith5responses(Mayeretal.,2003). CanEIReallybeMeasuredWithaQuiz? AccordingtoMatthews,Roberts,andZeidner(2004),thereareanumberofproblemsandseriousomissionsintheareaofEIasmeasuredbyasimpleself-reportassessment. Inactualfact,thisissueiswhatledMayer,Caruso,andSaloveytoarguethatperformance-basedmeasuresareneededforEItobeunderstoodasanactualcognitiveability(Matthews,Roberts&Zeidner,2004). TheirargumentthenresultedinthedevelopmentoftheMulti-FactorEmotionalIntelligenceScale(theMEIS)and,morerecently,theMSCEIT. ToconsiderEIasascientificconstruct,itisnecessarytodeterminewhetherEIisameasurablephenomenon(Matthewsetal.,2004).Self-reportmeasuresofEIhaveshownsatisfactoryinternalconsistencyreliablyacrossavarietyofcultures,aswellasmorethanadequatelevelsoftest-retestreliabilityover1–and4-monthperiods(Matthewsetal.,2004). Ontheotherhand,performance-basedmeasuresofEIhavebeenshowntopresentanumberofproblemsintermsofreliability(Matthewsetal.,2004).AlltheseissuesseemtosuggestthatEImaynotbeabletobemeasured. Indeed.WhetherornotEItestsactuallymeasureatheoreticalconstructortraitistermed‘constructvalidity’,and,inactualfact,Matthewsandcolleagues(2004)concludedthatneitherperformance-basedorself-reportmeasuresofEImeetthecriteriaforwhatisdeemed‘constructvalidity’. However,pastresearchhasfoundarelativelymodestassociationbetweenself-reportmeasuresofEIandactualabilitymeasures(Matthewsetal.,2004).WhatacomplicatedpictureEIpresents!Whatarewetomakeoftheseclaims? Well,furtherresearchintothemeasurementofEIiscertainlywarranted–particularlyintovalidationstudiesofself-reportmeasuresofEI.AccordingtoMatthewsetal(2004),“therearemajorconceptual,psychometric,andappliedproblemsandissuestobeovercomebeforeEIcanbeconsideredagenuine,scientificallyvalidatedconstructwithreal-lifepracticalsignificance”(p.192). Otherresearch,however,arguesagainstwhatMatthewsandcolleaguespresentedinthe2004papertitled‘Sevenmythsaboutemotionalintelligence’.ItdoesinactualfactsupportthenotionthatEIcanbereadilymeasuredusingtests,particularityself-reporttests. However,justbecausesomethingiseasilymeasuredthisdoesnotmeanthatsuchmeasuresareaccurate. ThefactthatEIismadeupofarangeofskillsdoesmeanthatself-reportisnotthemostaccuratewaytomeasureEI(Matthewsetal.,2004).Thisalsomeans,however,thateventhoughself-reportmeasuresarenoteffectivemeasuresofEI,thatbecauseEIconsistsofarangeofskillsandabilities,inasimilarveintothemeasurementofotherskills,theseskillscanbemeasured! Inotherwords,yes,EIabilitytestsarelegitimatemeasuresofEI. What’sinanEmotionalIntelligenceQuestionnaire? Generallyspeaking,EIismeasuredinthreedifferentways: Self-report Other-report Abilitymeasures Avarietyofscales,quizzesandquestionnaireshavebeendevelopedforeachofthesemethodsofmeasuringEI.TherearefourgeneraltypesofEItests,whicharedescribedinmoredetailsoon! Abilitiesbasedtests(includingtheMSCEIT) Trait-basedtests(suchastheBar-OnEQi) Competency-basedtests–(includingtheESCI) Behavior-basedtests–(forexample,theGenos) WhilstallprovidemeasuresofEI,forsituationswhereanaccurate,objectiveassessmentofEIiswanted(suchasrecruitment)theconsensusfromtheresearchistousetheMSCEIT(Bradberry,2014). TheEmotionalIntelligenceScale Schutteandcolleagues(1998)developedameasureofemotionalintelligencebasedonthemodelthatwaspublishedbySaloveyandMayerin1990.Sixty-twoitemswerefoundtobereflectiveofthedimensionsofSaloveyandMayer’smodel(Schutte,Malouff,Hall,Haggerty,Cooper,Golden,&Dornheim,1998). Itwasdevelopedfrom20yearsofglobalresearch.TheEQ-iisaself-reportmeasureforindividualsaged16yearsandolderandcanbedeliveredonline.Ittakesapproximately30minutes,andparticipantsarerequiredtorespondtoquestionsdesignedtoassesskeyaspectsofemotionalskillsrelatedtolifeandworkplaceperformance. Suchskillshavebeenshowntoaffectperformanceincomplexareassuchasconflictresolutionandplanning(ACER,2016). TheresultsfromtheEQ-icanproviderespondentswithinformationaboutemotionalskillstheycanimproveaswellasthoseareasthattheyexcelin–whichcanthenleadtoindividualshavingthecapacitytoutilizetheirstrengthstomaximizeperformanceindailytasks(ACER,2016). TheEQ-i2.0isadministeredfromanonlineportalthatachievessimpleandefficientadministration,scoringandreporting. Onceanindividualcompletesthetest,areportisproducedthattakestheformofaninventory.Theinventoryincludes15competenciesthatcenteraround5compositeareasofEI–self-perception,self-expression,interpersonal,decision-makingandstressmanagement(ACER,2016). Althoughtakingthetestisfree,inordertoadministerthetestapractitionermustmeettherequirementsoftheEQ-iqualificationlevel. TheEQ-iisbasedonBar-On’smodelofemotional-socialintelligence,anditisaccompaniedbytheEQ-360(ConsortiumforResearchonEmotionalIntelligenceinOrganizations–CREIO,2018). TheEQ-360providesamorecomprehensiveanalysisofEQbecauseitalsoincludesinformationprovidedbyothers.ObserverratingsarethenconsideredinconjunctionwiththeresultsofanEQ-i-2.0self-reporttogiveamoredetailedprofile(CREIO,2018). 2.ProfileofEmotionalCompetence(PEC) ThistestwasdevelopedbyBrasseur&Mikolajczakandprovidesseparatemeasuresofintra-personalEIandinter-personalEI(CREIO,2018).Itlooksat5coreemotionalcompetencies–identification,understanding,expression,regulation,anduseofemotions–intheselfandothers. Ithasbeenextensivelyvalidatedinresearch,withresultstakenfromatotalsampleofalmost22000individuals(CREIO,2018).Itisavailablefreeofchargeforresearchandclinicalpurposes. ThefullPECconsistsof50itemsandtakesapproximately1-15minutestoadminister,andtheshortformincludes20itemsandtakes5–10minutestocomplete.ThePECisaself-reportmeasure,however,itneedstobeadministeredbyapsychologistwhoisfamiliarwiththeemotionalintelligenceandemotionalcompetenceresearchandtheory(CREIO,2018). 3.TheTraitEmotionalIntelligenceQuestionnaire(TEIQue) TheTEIQuewasdevelopedbyDr.K.V.Petridesandisavailablefreeofchargeforacademicandclinicalresearch(CREIO,2018). Thefull-formconsistsof153items,measuring15distinctfacets,4factorsandglobaltraitEI.Theshort-formisa30-itemtestthatmeasuresglobaltraitEIwhichwasdevelopedfromthefull-formTEIQue(CREIO,2018). Basedoncorrelationswithcorrespondingtotalfacetscores,2itemswereselectedforinclusionfromeachofthe15facetsofthefull-formTEIQue. Thisquestionnaireisalsopresentedtogatherratingsfromobservers–theTEIQue360°and360°Short-form(CREIO,2018).Dr.StellaMavrovelialsodesignedtheTEIQueChild-formthatissuitedtochildrenaged8–12years. Thisquestionnaireconsistsof75itemswhicharerespondedtoona5-pointscaleandlooksattheninedistinctfacetsoftraitEIinchildren(CREIO,2018). 4.Wong’sEmotionalIntelligenceScale(WEIS) Thisisaself-reportmeasureofEIdesignedtobeusedbyChineserespondents(CREIO,2018).ItisbasedonthefourabilitydimensionsmentionedpreviouslythatmakeupEI.Itconsistsoftwoparts: Thefirstpartincludes20scenarios.Respondentschoosetheoptionthatmostcloselyreflectsthereactiontheyarelikelytohaveineachscenariothatisdescribed(CREIO,2018) Thesecondpartismadeupof20abilitypairs.Respondentsarerequiredtoselectoneoftwotypesofabilitiesthatbestdemonstratestheirstrength(CREIO,2018). WhatDoesanEQScoreMean? EQisanemotionalquotientscore. ItisfoundbyassessingthebehavioralfactorsthatreflectEI. Forexample,theEQscorereflectsthewayinwhichapersonreactsinavarietyofsituations,including: Stressfulorfrustratingsituations Failures,ordisappointingsituations Positionsofleadership Howanindividualmanagestheemotionsofpeopleofarangeofdifferentages,and Handlingdiversityandculturalsensitivities(MyFrameworks,2017).
