TheArupdesignteamusedtheexperiencegainedfromworkingontheLondonEyetooptimisethedesignoftheSingaporeFlyer.Theteamdevelopedauniquespokecableandrimstructurearrangementthatsimultaneouslyprovidesrestrainttotheradialtranslationalbucklingintheplaneofthewheelandthetorsionalbucklingalongtheaxisoftherim.Theresultisatwo-dimensionalladdertrussstructurethatcreatesalightweightandeleganticonfortheSingaporeskyline. ProjectSummary 1 Asia’slargestobservationwheel 165mtall 45kmpanoramicviews 1of2 Illuminated-theSingaporeFlyerobservationwheelatdusk. Aninnovativeverticalerectionmethodwasusedtoovercomethesupportstructurelimitationsandspaceconstraintsonsite.Thewheelwaserectedina'pieslice'fashion,witheachsegmentbeingrotateduntilallsegmentswereinstalled. Singapore's"SumatraSquall"windconditionsposedafurtherchallengetothedesignteam.Extensivewindresearchanddynamicmodellingwerecarriedouttoensurethecomfortandsafetyofpassengersinwindyweather. TheSingaporeFlyerwasofficiallyopenedon15April2008.
