TheArupdesignteamusedtheexperiencegainedfromworkingontheLondonEyetooptimisethedesignoftheSingaporeFlyer.Theteamdevelopedauniquespokecableandrimstructurearrangementthatsimultaneouslyprovidesrestrainttotheradialtranslationalbucklingintheplaneofthewheelandthetorsionalbucklingalongtheaxisoftherim.Theresultisatwo-dimensionalladdertrussstructurethatcreatesalightweightandeleganticonfortheSingaporeskyline. Aninnovativeverticalerectionmethodwasusedtoovercomethesupportstructurelimitationsandspaceconstraintsonsite.Thewheelwaserectedina'pieslice'fashion,witheachsegmentbeingrotateduntilallsegmentswereinstalled. Singapore's"SumatraSquall"windconditionsposedafurtherchallengetothedesignteam.Extensivewindresearchanddynamicmodellingwerecarriedouttoensurethecomfortandsafetyofpassengersinwindyweather. TheSingaporeFlyerwasofficiallyopenedon15April2008.
