Thequalificationwasamendedinresponsetoperceivedneeds,leadingtothelaunchinSeptember1988oftheCTEFLA(theCertificateinTeachingEnglishasaForeignLanguagetoAdults).By1996,theCTEFLAbecametheRSA/CambridgeCELTAandin2001itwasknownsimplyasCambridgeCELTA. In2011,CambridgeEnglishLanguageAssessmentandIHLondonco-operatedtolaunchajointlyproducedonlineblendedCELTAcourse:CELTAOnline.[11] CELTAforteachersofadultlearners[edit] CELTAfocusesonteachingadultlearners,butmanyoftheskillsandtechniquesapplytoteachingyounglearnersaswell.CandidateswhoplantoteachmainlyyounglearnerscouldtaketheYoungLearnerExtensiontoCELTA,aftercompletingCeltauntil2010whenYoungLearnerExtensionceasedtoexist.[12] Courseadmissions[edit] CELTAissuitableforcandidateswhoarebeginningtheircareerandexperiencedteacherswhohavereceivedlittlepracticalteachertrainingorwhowishtogainaninternationalcertificationoftheirELTskills.Teacherswhoalreadyhaveaninitialteachertrainingqualification,andwhohaveatleastoneyear’sEnglishLanguageTeachingexperience,maybemoresuitedtoanotherqualificationsuchasDelta.[12]CELTAissuitableforteachersatFoundationandDevelopinglevelontheCambridgeEnglishTeachingFramework,whereasDeltaisdesignedforteachersatProficientandExpertlevelsoftheframework.[8] CELTAapplicantsarerequiredtohaveEnglishlanguageskillsequivalenttoatleastlevelC1oftheCEFR–astandardofEnglishthatenablestheteachingandunderstandingoflanguageissuesatarangeoflevels,frombeginnertoupper-intermediatestudents. CELTAapplicantsshouldbeovertheageof18andideally,haveastandardofeducationequivalenttothatrequiredforentryintohighereducation(e.g.highschooldiplomaorA-Levels).Applicantswithoutformalqualificationsmaybeacceptediftheycandemonstratethattheyarelikelytocompletethecoursesuccessfully.[13] Applicantsareaskedtocompleteawrittentask.ThetaskwillfocusonlanguageawarenessandconsiderationofissuesrelatedtoteachingEnglish.IfthewrittentaskdemonstratesanappropriatelevelofEnglishandthepotentialtodeveloptheskillsneededtopassthecourse,theapplicantwillbeinvitedtoaninterview.[12] Thenatureoftheinterviewvariesfromcentretocentre.Itmaybeanindividualintervieworagroupinterviewandmaybeconductedface-to-face,onthetelephoneoronSkype.Theinterviewisanopportunityforcentrestoprovideinformationtocandidates,aswellastoassesscandidates’potentialtosuccessfullycompletethecourse(i.e.candidateswillbeaskedtoshowhowtheythinkaboutlanguageandlearning/teachingEnglish).[6] TheaveragecostoftakingaCELTAcoursearoundtheworldisaboutUSD2000.[14] Courseaimsandmainfeatures[edit] CELTAisaninitialteachertrainingqualificationdesignedtohelpcandidatesacquireandimprovetheskillsneededforteachingEnglish,withanemphasisonhands-onteachingpractice.Theofficialcourseaimsareasfollows.
