Woo-ryongquicklyseesthatthevillageisplaguedbyratsthatdonotfearhumansanddonotfallfortrapsandpoisons.ThechiefexplainsheandhispeoplecameherewhentheyheardChinesesoldierswereapproachingtheiroldvillage.Theyhidthevillagelepersinacavewiththevillageshaman.ButwhentheChinesehadnotreachedthevillage,theyreturnedtothecavebutfoundallthelepersweredeadandbeingeatenbyrats.Theviciousvermintheninvadedthevillagebecauseithadnoshamantokeepthemout. Woo-ryongvolunteerstogetridoftheratsinexchangeforthepriceofapigthatwillhelppayforhisson'smedicaltreatment.Hespreadsaspecialpowderacrossthevillageandgoestoanearbyhilltop.Checkingthewinddirectionhelightsaverysmokeyfirethatsmothersthevillageinsmoke.Atthesametime,Mi-sook,whohasbeenforcedbythechieftobecomethenewvillageshamanbeginsapurificationritualwithbells.RatsstartpouringoutofthebuildingsfollowingWoo-ryung'spowdertoacave.
