     Itwasn’tthatzannieswerecommon,butNitahaddissectedplentyduringthemonthssheandhermotherspentinSoutheastAsialastyear.She’dbeenlookingforwardtodissectingsomethingnew.Ifshe’dwantedtocutupthesameunnaturalsasusual,shewouldhaveaskedtostaywithherdadintheStatesandworkonunicorns.

     But,ifNitawasbeinghonestwithherself,mostofherhabitsandlifechoiceswerebadsigns.

     Nitapulledonawhitelabcoat.Shealwayslikedwearingit—itmadeherfeellikearealscientistataprestigiousuniversityorlaboratorysomewhere.Sometimessheputthegogglesonevenwhenshedidn’tneedtojustsoshecouldcompletethelook.

     Hermotherwashedherhandsinthesink.“Tonight.IgotatipwhenIwasbringingthisbeautyback.I’mflyingtoBuenosAires.”
     “Pishtacos?”askedNita,tryingtoholdinherexcitement.She’dneverhadachancetodissectapishtaco.Howwouldtheirbodiesbemodifiedforadietmadecompletelyofhumanbodyfat?ThepromiseofapishtacodissectionwastheonlythingthathadconvincedNitamovingtoPeruwasagoodidea.Hermotheralwaysknewhowtotempther.

     Nitafollowedandfoundhersitting,bootedfeetonthekitchentableassheunscrewedthetopofthepiscobottlefromthefridgeandtookaswig.Notcocktail-drinkpisco,ormixed-with-sodapisco,juststraight.Nitahadtrieditoncewhenshewashomealone,thinkingitwouldbeagoodcelebrationdrinktoringinherseventeenthbirthday.Itdidn’tburnasmuchaswhiskyorvodka,orevensake,butitkickedinfast,anditkickedinhard.Hermotherhadfoundherwithherfacesquishedagainstthewall,cryingbecauseitwouldn’tmoveforher.ThenMomhadlaughedandlefthertheretosuffer.SheshowedNitathepicturesafterward—therewasanawfullotofdroolonthatwall.
     Nitahadn’tsampledanythingintheliquorcabinetsince.
     “Oh,andNita?”Hermotherputthepiscoonthetable.

     ThatremindedNita—therewasanarticleinthelatestissueofNatureonzanniesthatshewantedtoread.SomeonewhohadclearlydissectedfewerzanniesthanNita,butwithaccesstobetterequipment,hadwrittenadetailedanalysisofhowzanniesconsumedpain.Therewereallsortsoftheoriesabouthowpainwasrelative,andthesameinjuryontwopeoplecouldbeperceivedcompletelydifferently.Thescientistshadbeenresearchingzannies—wasittheseverityoftheinjurythatfedthem,ortheperson’sperceptionofhowmuchithurt?

Nitacouldn’trememberatimewhenshehadn’tbeenfascinatedbydeadthings—perhapsbecauseherhomewasalwaysfullofthem.Asfarbackasshecouldremember,herparentshadacquiredthebodiesofunnaturalsandsoldthepiecesontheinternet.Thedarknet,tobespecific.Blackmarketbodypartsellersdidn’tjustposttheiritemsoneBay.ThatwashowyouendedupwithashortvisitfromtheInternationalNon-HumanPolice—INHUP—andalongstintinjail.
