Despitedoubtfromcritics,[13]Shinn'saceintheholewastheCharlotteColiseum,astate-of-the-artarenathatwouldseatalmost24,000spectators,thelargestbasketball-specificarenaevertoserveasafull-timehomeforanNBAteam.OnApril5,1987,then-NBACommissionerDavidSterncalledShinntotellhimhisgrouphadbeenawardedthe24thNBAfranchise,tobeginplayin1988.FranchiseswerealsograntedtoMiami,Minneapolis-SaintPaul,andOrlando. Withthefirstpickinthe1991NBAdraft,theHornetsdraftedpowerforwardLarryJohnsonfromtheUniversityofNevada,LasVegas.Johnsonhadanimpactseason,finishingamongtheleagueleadersinpointsandrebounds,andwinningthe1992NBARookieoftheYearAward.Additionally,GuardKendallGillledtheclubinscoring,averagingover20pointspergame.TheteamstayedincontentionforaplayoffspotuntilMarch,butfinishedtheyearwitha31–51record. 1992–1995:TheJohnson/Mourningera[edit] TheHornetswereinthelotteryagainin1992andwonthesecondoverallpickinthedraft,usingittoselectGeorgetowncenterAlonzoMourning.Charlottenowhadtwo20–10threatsinJohnsonandMourning,whowithKendallGill,formedperhapstheleague'stopyoungtrio.Theteamfinishedtheirfifthseasonat44–38,theirfirst-everwinningrecordandgoodenoughforthefirstplayoffberthinfranchisehistory.FinishingfifthintheEasternConference,theHornetsupsettheBostonCelticsinthefirstround,withMourningwinningtheserieswitha20-footeringamefour.[21]However,theHornetslackedtheexperienceanddepthtodefeattheNewYorkKnicks,fallinginfivegamesinthesecondround.[22] TheHornetsfinishedthe1993–94seasonwitha41–41record,narrowlymissingtheplayoffs.DespiteinjuriestobothJohnsonandMourning,thetwoledtheteaminpoints-per-game. Inthe1994–95season,theHornetsfinishedwitha50–32record,returningtotheplayoffs.[23]JohnsonandMourningagainledtheteaminpoints-per-game,whilealsoleadingtheclubinrebounding.However,Charlottewasbouncedfromtheplayoffsinthefirstround,fallingtotheChicagoBullsinfourgames.Followingtheseason,theHornetstradedMourningtotheMiamiHeatforforwardGlenRice,centerMattGeiger,andguardKhalidReeves.[24] 1995–1998:TheGlenRiceera[edit] GlenRicewouldmakeanimmediateimpactafterjoiningtheHornets,leadingtheteaminscoringandpoints-per-gameduringthe1995–96season.WhileRiceandJohnsonprovidedhigh-poweredscoring,GeigertiedwithJohnsonfortheteamleadinrebounds,andAll-StarguardKennyAndersonranthepointfortheinjuredMuggsyBogues.TheHornetswerecompetitivebutfailedtoqualifyfortheplayoffs,againfinishingwitha41–41record.AllanBristowresignedattheendoftheseason,andwasreplacedbyDaveCowens. The1996off-seasonwasagainmarkedbyvastchanges:Andersondeclinedtore-sign,JohnsonwasshippedtotheKnicksforpowerforwardAnthonyMason,andtheteammadeatradeondraftday1996,acquiringcenterVladeDivacfromtheLosAngelesLakersinexchangefortherightstorookieandfutureHallofFamerKobeBryant,whomtheHornetspicked13thoverall.[25]Thenew-lookHornetsweresuccessful,withDivacandGeigerprovidingthecentercombination,Masonaveragingadouble-double,Boguesbackatthepoint,andRicehavingthefinestseasonofhiscareer.Theteamachievedthebestseasoninitshistoryatthetime,finishing54–28,andmakingitbacktotheplayoffs.[26]Despitethesuccessduringtheregularseason,theHornetswentdownrathermeeklytotheKnicksinthreegames. The1997–98seasonwasalsosuccessful.MuggsyBogueswastradedtwogamesintotheseason,andtheteampickeduppointguardDavidWesleyandshootingguardBobbyPhills.WithWesley,Phills,Rice,Mason,andDivac,theHornetsrompedthroughtheregularseason,finishingwitha51–31record.[27]TheHornetsmadeittoback-to-backplayoffsforthefirsttimeinfranchisehistory,advancingtothesecondround,onlytobestoppedbytheBulls. 1998–2002:Finalyearsoforiginalpersonnel[edit] The1998–99seasonwasshortened.TheseasondidnotstartuntilFebruary,asthelockoutshortenedtheregularseasontoonly50games.Additionally,GlenRicewastradedtotheLakersforEddieJonesandEldenCampbell,andDaveCowensresignedmidwaythroughtheseason.HewasreplacedbyformerCelticsteammatePaulSilas,whobecametheteam'sfifthheadcoach.Theteamfinishedwitha26–24record,butfailedtoqualifyfortheplayoffs. TheBobcatsheldtheirexpansiondraftonJune22,2004,pickingupyoungsterssuchasGeraldWallace,PrimožBrezec,andJasonKapono.Shortlyafter,theytradedwiththeLosAngelesClipperstoacquirethesecondpickinthe2004NBAdraft,whichtheyusedtoselectcenterEmekaOkaforfromConnecticut.TheBobcats'inauguralgame,andthefirstoftheir2004–05seasontookplaceonNovember4attheCharlotteColiseum,andwasa103–96losstotheWashingtonWizards.[43]Twodayslater,theywontheirfirstgameinfranchisehistoryovertheOrlandoMagic,111–100.[44]OnDecember14,theBobcatsbeattheNewOrleansHornetsinovertimeintheteam'sfirsttriptoCharlottesincerelocating.[45]TheBobcatsfinishedtheirinauguralseason18–64.[46]EmekaOkafor,however,wonthe2004–05NBARookieoftheYearAward.[47] Inthe2005NBAdraft,theBobcatsdraftedRaymondFeltonandSeanMayfromNorthCarolina.Intheirsecondseason,theBobcatsopenedCharlotteBobcatsArenawithanovertimevictoryovertheCeltics.Despitestrugglingformostoftheyear,theymanagedtocloseouttheseasonwithfourstraightwinstofinishwitharecordof26–56,aneight-gameimprovementfromthepreviousseason.Aftertheseason,theBobcatsannouncedthatNBAlegendandNorthCarolinanativeMichaelJordanhadboughtaminoritystakeintheteam.Aspartofthedeal,hebecameheadofbasketballoperations,thoughBickerstaffremainedgeneralmanager.[48] TheBobcatsshowedsomeimprovementduringthe2006–07season,postingaplayoff-hopefulrecordof22–33lateinFebruary2007.However,theteamwentthroughaneight-gamelosingstreakanddroppedtheirrecordto22–41byearlyMarch2007.Followingtheslump,JordanannouncedthatBickerstaffwouldnotreturntocoachthefollowingseason,butwouldfinishcoachingtheremainderofthe2006–07season.[42]TheBobcatswon11oftheirlast19gamesofBickerstaff'stenuretofinishtheirthirdseason33–49.OnJune3,2007,CharlotteColiseumwasdemolished,markingabitterendtotheoriginalHornetseraasitwasthehomeofCharlotte'soriginalNBAfranchise.Thearenawasonly19yearsold,ownedbythecityofCharlotte,butwasalreadyconsideredoutdatedbecauseofalackofluxuryboxesandsuites.ThearenawasdesignedforcollegebasketballaspartofCharlotte'spushtomaintaintheirpresenceintheACCbasketballtournamentrotation.[49] 2007–2010:TheLarryBrownera[edit] FrontofficeandcoachingwerekeyfocusesfortheBobcatsduringthe2007off-season.RodHigginswashiredasgeneralmanager,[50]andSamVincentwashiredasthesecondheadcoachinfranchisehistory.[51]Inthe2007NBAdraft,BrandanWrightwasselectedbytheBobcatswiththeeighthpick;hewassubsequentlytradedtoGoldenStateforJasonRichardson.TheBobcatswereunabletocapitalizeonoff-seasonmoves,finishingthe2007–08seasonwitha32–50record.Theteamstruggledamidrumorsofplayersclashingwiththecoach.[52]Afterayear,duringwhichhestruggledwithpersonneldecisions,SamVincentwasfiredinApril2008.[53] OnApril29,2008,theBobcatsreachedanagreementtohireBasketballHallofFamerLarryBrownasthethirdheadcoachinfranchisehistory.[54]Inthe2008NBAdraft,theBobcatsselectedD.J.AugustinfromTexasninthoverall.OnDecember10,2008,alittleoveramonthintotheseason,theBobcatsobtainedBorisDiawandRajaBellinatradewithPhoenix.Thetradeturnedouttobesuccessfulastheteamcameclosetoreachingthefranchise'sfirstplayoffberth,butfinishedfourgamesoutofeighthplacewitharecordof35–47.Followingtheseason,majorityownerBobJohnsonannouncedhewasputtingtheteamupforsale.
