Asia TheClubMedKani,Maldives(Review) ByMynnLeeonApril16,2019 •(Leaveacomment) IvisitedMaldivesalmost20yearsago.Itwasmygraduationtrip,andbecauseIwentwithagroupoffriendstovisitourMaldivianfriends,Iguessyoucansayitwasonehellofagraduationtrip.Wehadsuchafantastic2weeksontheislands—andIwillalwaysholdthosememoriesnearanddearforever.Fromthattimeon,Maldiveshadalwaysbeenspecialtome.SoimaginemyelationwhenIlearnedthatIwasheadingbacktoMaldivesagain—andthistime,toClubMedKani! TheClubMedKaniinMaldives TendaysinMaldives.TendaysjustonClubMedKani.Iwasheadingforaworkandplayholidaywithabunchoffriends—andweweretospendourtimeexploringandfilming,andthenrelaxingattheresortanditssurrounds.TheislandcountryofMaldivesismadeupofmorethan1,000coralislands,groupedinto26lowatollsoveralmost300²kmintheIndianOcean.Mostoftheislandsarenowhometolocalvillagesandluxuryresorts;leavingonly300islandsinhabited. ClubMedKaniislocatedonKanifinholuIsland—it’saprivateislandwheretheresorttakesuptheentire2-kmstretchofisland.Theislandislocatedabout20kmnorthofthemainislandcapitalofMale,andtheMaleInternationalAirportonHulhuleIslandrightnexttoit.JustliketheClubMedbrandallovertheworld,ClubMedKaniisanall-inclusiveresort—food,beverage(andalcohol,yay!)andawholelotofactivitiesareincludedinthestay.Bestpartthough,isthatitisapartyresortwithnightlyentertainmentandparties;butifyouwantyourownquiettime,there’salwaysaplacearoundtheislandtofindit.There’salwayssomethingexcitingtodoatClubMed. Ourteamallreadytohittheskies,andthentheocean! ArrivingattheMaleInternationalAirportatMaldives’HulhuleIsland. Andwe’reofftoourholidaydestination—viasea! ClubMedKani’slobbyreceptionarea. Couldn’tgetagoodviewoftheClubMedKanientranceatnight,sohere’sthemorningview. GettingtoMaldivesandClubMed WetookaneveningflightonAirAsia.TheflightfromKualaLumpurInternationalAirporttotheMaleInternationalAirporttookalittlemorethan4hours;soitwasdarkbythetimewearrivedinMaldives.OurreturnflightbacktoKualaLumpurwasalsoatnight,soitwasreallyapitythatwecouldn’tseethebeautyofMaldives(andallthatshadesofblueandturquoise)fromabove. Uponarrival,weheadedovertomanyresortboothsatthearrivalhalltolookfortheClubMedKanibooth.Theofficerattheboothwasalreadyexpectinguswithalistofnames;andwewereregisteredonthespot,andhadourluggagetaggedandlabeled.WewerethenescortedtothejettytoboardtheClubMedboatthatbroughtusstraightfromHulhuleIslandtoClubMedKaniinabout45minutes.Attheresortlobby,weweregivenabriefintroductionoftheresortbytheGOs(GuestOfficers),beforebeinghandedourkeys(whichisattachedtoaprettywristbandthatwehavetowearthroughoutourstay)andbroughttoourrooms. IloveKani…definitely! AndI’mgoingtobeinthisdreamlikestate,awayfromrealityforalittlewhile. Differentshadesofblue,anddifferentshadesofwhite. I’lljustbeswingingandchillingalldaylonginsuchabeautifulplace. TheClubMedKani,inallitsMaldivianbeauty. TheClubMedKaniExperience ItwashardtomakeouttheactualbeautyoftheresortwhenwefirstlandedonClubMedKanibecauseitwasdark—butwhatabreathtakingviewweweregreetedwithfirstthingthenextmorning.Frommyvisit20yearsago,Icouldjustvaguelyrecallthebeautyoftheisland(thephotosItookwithafilmcamerabackthendidn’treallyhelp);andatfirstsight,IwasremindedagainwhyMaldivesissospecial. Myeyeswererewardedwithbrightblueskieswithpatchesofwispywhite,turquoisewatersthatturntoshadesofbluefurtheroutintothehorizon,purewhiteglisteningsand,andcoconuttreeswithleaveslightlydancinginthebreeze.Oh,Maldives.Thethoughtofjusthavingthisvieweverydayforthenexttendaysmademyheartsohappywithjoy.ItmademewanttowakeupassoonasthesunriseseverymorningsothatInevermissamoment—andthat’sexactlywhatIdid. Thebeautifulcoconuttreelinedwalkwaytomybeachvilla. Comfybedwithsuchprettyaprettyturquoisefeaturewall. Andthiswasmyhomeforaweek! Abathroomwithfullamenitiesandhisandhersections. Andjustoutsidemyroomisthebeach! TheOceanviewSuperiorRooms Formostofourstay,wewereintheOceanviewSuperiorRooms.AlloftheroomsinClubMedKaniareeitherfacingthebeachorthegarden—andminewasalovelyvilla(withanotherroomnexttomine)rightsmackinfrontofthebeach,andallthewayatthefarendoftheresort.Ienjoyedthepeaceofbeingawayfromthemainactionofthislivelyresortformyownquiettime,butbeingsofaralsomeantthatIhadalotofwalkingtodoformealsandactivities! Ilovethewhite,darkorangeandturquoisecolorcombinationthatmakesuptheinterioroftheroom—itreflectedthewhitesand,thedarkorangeskyatdusk,andtheturquoisesea.Theroomcamewithallbasicamenitiesofa5TridentLuxuryServicesresort—King-sizedbed,hisandherbathroomwithseparateshower,vanity,bathrobesandslippers,safe,television,coffeeandteamakingfacilities,ahugein-roomsofatoloungeon,andaverandah.Therewasalsoalistofalltheresorts’otherfacilities,aswellastimingsformealsattherestaurantsandallthefunactivities. TheexclusiveoverwatervillasattheClubMedKani. Mycomfybedthatoverlookstheopensea. Adipintheoceananytimemyheartdesires! Checkoutthisbathtubwiththemostgorgeousviews. Thecollectionofvillasstandingonstiltsoverthesea,fromafar. ANightintheOverwaterVillas Lateronduringourstay,wemovedintotheluxuriousandexclusiveOverwaterVillas.ThevillasareseparatedfromtherestofClubMedKani—guestsherehaveexclusiveaccesstotheirownprivatebeachandtheMantaBarLounge(thatserveslatebreakfasts,andcanapeswithchampagneeveryevening).Onthedaythatweshiftedrooms,wewerechecked-inagainataseparatereceptionarea,andgivenanewdifferentcoloredwristbandtoaccessourvillas. TheOverwaterVillasareEVERYTHING.AssoonasIenteredthebeautifulwoodenvillawithstiltsoverthecrystalclearwaters,IfeltlikeIwastransportedintomyownlittlehaven.Thevillahasitsownentranceroomthatleadstothemainbedroomandashelteredbalconywithgorgeousseaviews.Thebalconyhasdeckchairsforsomesuntime;andstairsthatleaddowntowardstheoceanforaswim.AndafterI’mdonewithmyoceanswim,Icancontinuesoakinginmybubblebathwhilestillenjoyingtheendlessturquoisevistasthroughitsfull-lengthglasswindows.Oh,andinthemorning,Igettohavebreakfastinbedtoo!Ifeltsopampered. Whilestayingattheoverwatervillas,Igotmybreakfastsenttomyroom. TheSunsetBar,perfectplaceforone(ortwoorthree)sundownersbeforedinner. Allkindsofcuisineonmyplate—allfromthedeliciousbuffetatVelhiRestaurant. ClubMedKani’sall-whitenight—everyonedressesinwhiteandenjoydinneronthebeach. DrinksandeveningcanapesattheMantaLounge,exclusivefortheoverwatervillaguests. FoodandDrinks WhatIlovedaboutClubMedKani(andallClubMedsaroundtheworld),isthatitisall-inclusive—andthatappliestothealcoholicbeveragestoo.IcouldhaveasmanybeersandasmanycocktailsasIwant,allwhilesoakingupthesunontheloungechairbythebeach,orwhenchillingatthebar.Duringmystayattheresort,IprobablyhungoutthemostattheSunsetBar—Ilovetherelaxedvibeoftheplace,anditissocalmingjustsittingbyandwatchingthesunsetafteralongday.Andforamorehypedupscene,IruBaristheplacetogo—Ispentmanynightsdancingandpartyingitupwayintothenight. Wehadourmealsalmosteverydayatthebuffet-stylerestaurant,TheVelhi.Therewerejustsomanyoptionstochoosefrom—deliciousinternationalfares,myfavoritetraditionalAsiandishes,andmanyhealthyoptionstoo.Wedinedattherestaurantfor10-daysstraightsoweendeduphavingsomefavoritedishes—andwouldthenhopeandpraythatitwouldbeservedonthebuffetspreadagain(andcelebratewhenitdoes)! Themorerefineddiningrestaurant,TheKandu,servesalacartemenusandrequiresreservations;andthesmallerrestaurant,TheKanna,hasAsiansoups,sandwiches,andavarietyofsmallplates.Wedroppedbytheotherrestaurantsonceortwiceduringourstay;butIstillpreferthebuffetandthevarietyitbrings. DivinginMaldives’underwaterwithMrMantaRay. Justmeonasurfboard,watchingthesungodownattheendofanexcitingday. Walkingalongthisisolatedstretchofsandbank—inthemiddleoftheocean. Anexhilaratingrideonthejet-ski…ridingintothehorizon! EverySunday,localsfromthenearbyislandsdropbyClubMedKanitoselllittlesouvenirs. Activities—WaterSports,Snorkeling,DivingandMuchMore ThereisjustsomuchtodoinClubMedKani—IfeltasiftherewasnotenoughtimeformetodoallIwantedtodo.MostactivitiesareincludedwiththeClubMedpackageprice,butthereareothersthatrequireadditionalcharges.Duringmystay,Iwentonthespeciallyarrangedactivitieslikediving(youcanreadaboutmyexperiencehere),surfing(butthewavesweretoohighovercoralbottomsoIgotalittlescared),jet-skiing,dolphin-spotting,atriptothesandbanks,andevengotontheroughdoughnutride! Andofcourse,ImadesureIdidsomeoftheinclusiveactivitiesaswell,andwentkayaking,sailing(youcanlearnforfreetoo),joinedinonanaqua-fitnesssessionatthepool,andyoga.There’salsoagymonthebeachwithoceanviews;andsmalllittlefungamesandthingstoplayaroundtheresortaswell—waterswings,tabletennisandbeachvolleyball.Thetrapezeactivitywasstillunderconstructionduringmyvisit,butI’msureit’sprobablyupandrunningnow. EverySunday,theresortopensupitsdoorstothelocalMaldivianvendorsandsellerstosetuptheirstallsatthemainareaoftheresort—theyselllocalartsandcrafts,aswellasjewelryandlittletrinkets.Ididmostofmysouvenirshoppingthatnight! ThepartyatClubMedKanistartsfromdaytillnight! Theyevendanceinthepool. EspeciallyhappywhenIknowallthatcocktailsareforme. Thenightlyshowsarefunandentertaining—allperformedbytheClubMedGOs. Cheerstofreeflowchampagne! EntertainmentandParties WhatmakesClubMeddifferentfromalltheotherresortsintheworldarethepartiesandtheentertainment!Allthroughoutmystay,theGOsandtheguestswejustdancingandhavingfunallday—that’shonestlyhowIwouldpictureaholidayinClubMedKani.Musicwasalwaysintheairatthemainarea;andevenduringtheday,therewouldsometimeswebearandompartyattheSunsetBar—withsinging,dancing,andcolorfulsanddustthrowneverywhere. Atnightiswhentheentertainmentreallygetsintofullswing.Thereareopen-airedtheaterperformanceseverynight,wheretheGOteamperformsandentertainsthecrowdwiththeirtalents.Fromneonshows,tomusicalsandad-libperformances—someshowswereashilariousastheywereentertaining.AndthentheIruBarcomestoliveaswell—withthemednights,shotglassdominoes,andstageactivitiestokeeptheClubMedfestiveambiancegoingallthroughthenight. Shewalkstheworldwithturquoisediamonds. CanIjustliehereandrelaxforalonglongtime? Surroundedbysomuchbeauty,ittookmybreathaway. Sometimes,thestingraysjustcasuallyswimbytosayhi. Enjoyingthewonderfuloceanbreezealldayerrday. AttheEndoftheDay IhadthemostwonderfultimeatClubMedKani.Iwasalreadyinsuchagorgeousplace,madeevenmorewonderfulwiththeamountoffunthatwasaddedintomydays.Istillgotmyendlesssunshine,andmytasteoftheMaldivesocean—andthenIcouldlaterkickbackandenjoyacocktailbythebeachandfillmydayswithfun,laughter,andsomanythingstodo.TheGOsmadeeverythinglivelierbyjoiningusonmostofouractivities;andtheyevenhavealltheirmealswiththeguests. IespeciallylovedtheOverwaterVillas—IhavetosayitisoneofthemostluxuriousvillasIhaveeverstayedin.Imean,whatcanbeatthoseturquoisebluishhuesfrommywindowinthemorningassoonasIopenmyeyes?Andthat’swhyMaldiveswillalwaysbespecialtome—frommyveryfirstvisit,tothisvisit20yearslater.I’mgladIgottosavorbothtimeswiththepeoplethatIcherish;andIreallyhopethatthenexttimeIreturntotheisland,itwillbesoonerthan20years!
