Thispracticehasbeencalledintoquestionandoftencriticizedbythosewhoseethisasanunfairorbiasedwayofchoosingstudents,particularlysincegenerallyspeaking,thesechildrenofalumnidonotalwaysfareanybetter(andinsomecasesperhapsevenslightlyworse)onSATscores.Arecentstudyshowsthatat30“topcolleges”underreview,studentshada45%betterchanceofgettinginiftheyhadaparentalum.Somecollegesanduniversitieshaveapointawardingsystemforthestudentstheyareconsideringaccepting,andstudentswhoseparentsarealumnimaybeawardedpointsspecificallybecauseofthatrelationship.Sometimespointsarealsoawardedtograndchildren,siblingsorspousesofalumni,thoughgenerallyfewerpoints. OtherTypesofAdvantages Thequestionof“Ifparentsarealumniofauniversity,isiteasiertobeadmitted?”isaquestionthatcouldbeaskedofotheruniversitiesaswell.EliteschoolsintheIvyLeagueandelsewherearen’ttheonlyschoolsthatprovidesomeadmissionadvantagestostudentswhocanclaimanalumniparent.You’reprobablyawarethatmanycollegesanduniversitiesaremoreexpensiveforstudentswholiveoutofstate,whichiswhymanystudentsattendcollegewithinthestateoftheirresidency.However,someuniversitieswillwaivenonresidentfeesforstudentsofalumniparents.Othercollegesmightconsideranalumni-relatedstudentasin-stateevenwhenthey’renot,whichmightgivethemanadvantageintheadmissionsprocess.Somecollegesalsohavescholarshipopportunitiessetupspecificallyforstudentswithparentalumni.
