舒曼的母親原先期望他能夠成為律師，送他到萊比錫大學讀法律。

但是舒曼念到一半就拋棄法律，往他喜歡的音樂事業發展，希望能成為鋼琴演奏家和作曲家。

　　1829年舒曼開始跟隨弗雷德里希‧維克學習鋼琴與和聲。

隔年年底，舒曼寫出他第一個作品，一首鋼琴變奏曲。

1832年，舒曼想要成為鋼琴演奏家的美夢碎了！他右手的無名指受傷，讓他無法繼續演奏。

舒曼是怎麼受傷的呢?有人說，是因為舒曼採取錯誤的練習方式，才導致手指受傷；但也有現代科學研究，可能是因為舒曼腦部的疾病所導致。

因為這個變故，舒曼只好專心從事作曲工作，也為後人留下更多音樂遺產。

　　30年代舒曼發表許多作品，他寫了許多鋼琴曲，他的鋼琴作品中有許多日後浪漫主義慣用的語彙。

在與弗雷德里希‧維克的女兒，克拉拉‧維克交往後，克拉拉鼓勵舒曼創作交響曲。

兩人在1840年結婚；1841年三月，舒曼的《降B大調第一號交響曲》在孟德爾頌的指揮下，在萊比錫演出，受到熱烈的反應，這個成功大大的鼓舞了舒曼。

　　家庭生活幸福，加上克拉拉的鼓勵，讓舒曼的創作力旺盛，他開始創作交響曲、協奏曲、室內樂。

1841年在《第一號交響曲》大獲成功後，舒曼原本預備為克拉拉的生日寫一首交響曲，當作生日禮物，不過這首曲子並沒有受到歡迎；舒曼十二年後修改再演出，成為舒曼的《第四號交響曲》。

克拉拉不只是舒曼精神上的支柱，她還是擔當起舒曼音樂的詮釋者，舒曼相當受到歡迎的《a小調鋼琴協奏曲》於1845年在萊比錫演出時，由克拉拉擔任獨奏。

在舒曼死後，克拉拉變成舒曼音樂的傳播者，隨著她的巡迴演奏，舒曼的音樂流傳開來。

　　1843年萊比錫音樂學院成立，舒曼受聘維作曲教師。

1850年起擔任杜塞多夫的常任指揮。

舒曼的精神失常問題從1843年起就出現，影響他的創作工作。

直到1854年舒曼竟然投多瑙河自殺，獲救後被送到波恩附近的家私人精神病院，直到去世為止。
