Seekingtounderstandandtransformtheworld’senergysystems,MITresearchersandstudentsinvestigateallaspectsofenergy.Theydiscovernewwaysofgeneratingandstoringenergy,asincreatingbiofuelsfromplantwasteandinholdingelectricityfromrenewablesourcesincost-effective,high-capacitybatteries.Theycreatemodelsanddesignexperimentstodeterminehowwecanimproveenergyefficiencyatallscales,fromnanostructuresandphotovoltaiccellstolargepowerplantsandsmartelectricalgrids.Theyanalyzehowpeoplemakedecisionsaboutenergy,whetherasindividualconsumersorwholenations,andtheyforecastwhatthesocialandenvironmentalconsequencesofthesedecisionsmightbe. Infact,thestudyofenergyissoimportantandsopervasiveatMIT,theMITEnergyInitiativehasdevisedanEnergyStudiesMinor,integratingcoursesfrommanydifferentdisciplines,forstudentstodeveloptheexpertiseneededtoreshapehowtheworldusesenergy.Theminorhastwocomponents:acore,whichcombineskeycoursesinenergyscience,technology,andsocialscience,andaprogramofelectives,fromwhichstudentscanselectcoursesastheypursuetheirparticularinterests. ManyoftheseenergycoursesarerepresentedonOCW.Wehavearrangedthecourselistbelowinaccordancewiththecoreandelectivesstructureoftheenergyminor,andaddedsomeadditionalenergycourses,labeledother,thathavebeentaughtatMITandpublishedonOCWbutarenotpartoftheminorprogram.
