TaiwanInnocenceProjectisexcitedtoshareagoodnewsthatonMay15,2020,ourclient,Mr.HsiehChih-Hung,whohadbeensentencedtodeathin2011andspent18yearsbehindbars,wasexonerated! On April1,2020.SeniorResearchFellowIraBelkinandUSALIstaffAllenClayton-Greene,AmyGao,YinChi,andEliBlood-Pattersonintroduce the U.S.-AsiaLawInstitute's(USALI) program:"PreventingandRedressingWrongfulConvictions." Throughthisprogram,internationalexperts,includingindividualswhothemselveshadbeenwrongfullyconvictedandlaterexonerated,sharedtheirexperience andstate-of-the-artexpertisewiththeAsiancriminaljusticecommunityconcerningtherootcausesofwrongfulconvictionsandmeasuresthatcanbeadoptedtopreventthemandredressthem.Belkindiscussestheprojectbackground,activities,andlessonslearned,whileUSALIstaffmemberssharethe long-term impacttheprogramhashadinTaiwan,China,andJapanrespectively.Overthecourseofthefouryearprogram,approximately70criminaljusticeexpertsfromAsiaparticipatedinintensivemonth-longworkshopsatNYUandover500ChineseandJapaneseexpertsattendedlecturesgivenbyUSALI-sponsoredinternationalexpertsinChinaandJapan,respectively.TheuseofsocialmediaexpandedtheaudienceinAsiatohundredsofthousands.TheprojecthasledtotheexpansionofInnocenceworkinAsiaaswellasmoreAsianexpertsjoiningtheinternationalcommunityoflawyersdoingInnocencework.ProjectparticipantspublishedseveralbooksandnumerousarticlesinmultiplelanguagesontopicsrelevanttoInnocencework,fromhowcommoninterrogationtechniquescanleadtofalseconfessionstowhyprisonsshouldhavelawlibraries.EventVideos PartI:SeniorResearchFellowIraBelkindiscussestheprojectbackground.PartII:SeniorResearchFellowdiscussestheprojectoverview,includingactivitiesinNewYorkandoverseas.PartIII:ResearchScholarYinChidiscussestheprojectimpactinChina,especiallyitsimpactforInnocenceMovementGroups.PartIV:ResearchScholarAllenClayton-GreeneintroducestheTaiwanInnocenceProject,includingthesuccessfulexonerationsandcapacitybuildinginAsia.PartV:ResearchScholarAmyGaointroducesInnocenceProjectJapan(IPJ)andUSALI’simpactinJapan.ProjectVI:ResearchScholarandProgramManagerEli-BloodPattersondiscussestheimpactthattheprojecthadintheUnitedStates.PartVII:SeniorResearchFellowIraBelkindiscusseslessonslearnedfromtheproject.  OnDecember11,2019theTaiwanInnocenceProject(TIP)willholdthefirstInnocenceFilmFestival,entitled“WhatIf”Thedocumentaries(withlimitedEnglishsubtitles)fallunderthreethemes:IfLifeCouldBeReplayed, IfPainCanSpeak,&IfTruthIsNotTrue.
