Themainareasincorporatedintobusinessadministrationareoperations,logistics,marketing,economics,HumanResources(HR),andmanagement.Anadministratoroverseesthesepartsofanorganizationtomakesurethatthey'reallfunctioningproperlyandefficientlyindividually,andthatthey'reallworkingtogethertomakethebusinessprofitable.Heorshemayalsocomeupwithwaystomakethedepartmentmoreprofitable,andoftendelegatestaskstoemployeesinthedepartment.Largecompaniesusuallyhaveatleastoneadministratorassignedtoeacharea. Roles Anofficemanagermayberesponsibleforschedulingexecutivemeetings. Mostcompanieshavearangeofadministrativerolesindifferentpartsoftheircorporatehierarchy.Attheofficelevel,therearebusinesssupportofficers,whomightdevelopandmaintainanofficedatabase,overseeotheremployeesforprojects,andhelpthemanagerwithanalyzingperformancetrends.Atthenextlevelthereareofficemanagers,whooverseeanentireoffice,makebudgetsandanalysesofstaffperformance,designprocedures,andassignprojects,amongotherthings.Ifanorganizationislarge,itmayhaveseveralassistantmanagerstohelptheoverallofficemanager. Afteroffice-levelmanagers,therearedivisionadministrators,whooverseelargeportionsofanorganization.Theygenerallyspecializeinoneareaofbusinessadministration.Forinstance,acompanymighthaveapersonwithaspecializationinHRadministrationoverseethatdepartmentandmakesureit'sworkingefficientlytomeetthebusiness'overallgoals.ThisincludesthingslikemeasuringtheperformanceofHRstaffmembers,hiringnewstaffforthedepartmentifneededorgettingridofnon-performingstaff,andmakingsurethattheprocessforhiringisworkable. Theheadofoveralloperationsinbusinessadministrationisusuallyreferredtoasthechiefexecutiveofficer(CEO)orpresident.TheCEOandpresidentmaybethesameoffice,butthisvariesbetweencompanies.TheCEO,dependingonthesizeofthecompany,mayhaveseveralvicepresidents,eachresponsibleforoneareaofcompanyoperations.Forexample,therecouldbeavicepresidentformarketing,oneforresearchanddesign,andoneforsalesorcustomerrelations.Eachoftheseoperateindependently. WorkEnvironment Theworkenvironmentforsomeoneinbusinessadministrationdependslargelyonthetypeofjobheorsheisdoing.Thoseonthelowerendofthehierarchyoftenworkinstructuredenvironmentsandmakefrequentreportstotheirsuperiors,whilethosehigherupmayhavemorefreedomwiththeirschedules.Dependingonthetypeoforganization,workhoursmaybe9AMto5PMortheymaybemoreflexible.Overtimeisoftenrequiredwhenbigprojectsarenearingcompletion,orwhenannualanalysesandpresentationsneedtobemade. Generallyspeaking,anyoneinthistypeofpositionneedstohaveexcellentcommunicationskills,asheorshewillbeworkingwithalotofdifferentpeople,sendingoutmemos,andmakingreports.Theyalsoneedtobecomfortablewithmakingpresentations,andtheyneedtobeabletoleadpeople.Anotherimportantskillisbeingabletounderstandhowmanydifferentpartsofasystemororganizationworktogether,sothattheycanmakeworkablesystemsandfigureoutwhat'swrongwiththosethatdon'twork.Mostarealsoverygoodatmathandhaveanunderstandingofeconomics,sincetheyusuallymakebudgetsandanalyzetheiroffice,department,orcompany'sperformance. Education Manyuniversitiesofferbusinessadministrationprogramsforbothonlineandofflinestudy.Atypicalcurriculumcoversthecriticalaspectsofoperatingabusinesssuchascustomerservice,businessfinance,marketing,andhumanresources.Aspiringadministratorscanimprovetheirmarketabilitybyminoringinarelatedfieldsuchasanappliedscienceforengineeringorpsychologyformarketingandsales.
