According to the latest research on literacy and learning, we find many countries from all around the world with a literacy rate of more than 95 ... Aliteracyratethathoversaround100%isseeninquiteafewothercountriesoftheworld,includingAzerbaijanandCuba. Andorraisonesuchcountrywithvirtually100%ofitspopulacebeingliterate.ApartofSouthwesternEurope,itsgovernmentdirectsbylawthateverychildbetweentheagesof6and16isrequiredtosubmittocompulsoryattendancewithinitsschoolsystems. citizensfrommanyofthecountriesconstitutingtheformerSovietUnionand“EasternBloc”countriescanlayclaimtohavingsomeofthehighestaccesstotertiaryleveleducationalopportunitiesintheworld. Overthepastseveraldecades,globalliteracyrateshavesignificantlyincreased.Themainreasonsforsuchanupwardtrendstemsfromtheevolutionoftheeducationalsystemofmanydevelopingcountries,andanincreasedacknowledgementoftheimportanceofeducationtothesesocietiesintheirrespectiveentireties.Still,manynationsarestrugglingwiththeprovisionofeducationalresourcestobettertheirpopulaces,buildingthenecessaryinfrastructureitrequiresandensuringregularenrollmentofstudentswithintheirschools.Nonetheless,eventhosecountrieslaggingwellbehindglobalnormsrealizehownecessaryitistosupplyhighqualityeducationtothemassesinordertocompeteandsucceedintheglobalmarket. Accordingtothelatestresearchonliteracyandlearning,wefindmanycountriesfromallaroundtheworldwithaliteracyrateofmorethan95percent.Tohelpreaderslearnmoreabouttheworldleadersinthisfield,wehavehighlightedthecountrieswiththehighestliteracyratesfromacrosstheglobe. Making100%LiteracyRatesHappen Higheducationalstandardsareseenincountriesallaroundtheworld,buttheliteracyrateinsomecountries,likeAndorra,Luxembourg,Norway,Liechtensteinandafewotherscan’tbeignored.Withinthese,literacyreachesvirtually100percent. Andorraisonesuchcountrywithvirtually100%ofitspopulacebeingliterate.ApartofSouthwesternEurope,itsgovernmentdirectsbylawthateverychildbetweentheagesof6and16isrequiredtosubmittocompulsoryattendancewithinitsschoolsystems.TheAndorrangovernmenthasmanagedtoprovidefreeschoolinguptothesecondarylevelofeducation.This,alongwithapercentageofitsGDPbeingallottedfortheeducationsector,hasresultedinveryhighliteracyratesinAndorra.Similarpracticesareobservedinothercountries,suchasFinland,wherearound7%ofGDPisspentoneducation. OtherNationswithNear-CompleteLiteracy Aliteracyratethathoversaround100%isseeninquiteafewothercountriesoftheworld,includingAzerbaijanandCuba.CountriessuchasGeorgia,Tajikistan,Russia,Poland,andSloveniahavealsoallachievedliteracyratesonornear100%.FocusingonRussia,itisestimatedthat53%ofthepopulationtherereceivessomeformoftertiaryeducation.Thegovernmentbelievesinfreeeducationaldeliverancesystems,andthefieldsgreatlyfocusedonthereinarein“STEM”fields(science,technology,engineering,andmathematics). TurningtowardscountrieslikeSlovakia,Turkmenistan,Uzbekistan,andKyrgyzstan,theyremainintherangenear100%.Slovakiahas20publiclyoperateduniversitiesand10privateuniversities.Indeed,citizensfrommanyofthecountriesconstitutingtheformerSovietUnionand“EasternBloc”countriescanlayclaimtohavingsomeofthehighestaccesstotertiaryleveleducationalopportunitiesintheworld. ShouldOtherCountriesFollowtheLeaders? Thedecrementsseenaswemovefromthetopofthelistforcountrieswiththehighestliteracyratesdowntothebottomcanbelargelyexplainedbythepercentageofthesecountries’respectiveGDPsthatareapportionedtotheeducationsector.Alackofeducationalinfrastructure,aswellashowimportantthepopulationofacountryconsidersattainingeducation,greatlyinfluencesliteracyrates.Fromthecountrieswhereliteracyratesarethehighest,weseethatproactivepublicinstructionpoliciesandtheemphasizingofeducationalspendingwithingovernmentbudgetscangoalongwayinincreasingapopulation’sknowledgebase.
