Memoriesoffearfuleventscanlastalifetime.Theprelimbic(PL)cortex,asubregionofprefrontalcortex,playsacriticalroleinfearmemoryretrievalovertime.Moststudieshavefocusedonacquisition,consolidation,andretrievalofrecentmemories,butmuchlessisknownabouttheneuralmechanismsofremotememory.Usinganewknock-inmouseforactivity-dependentgeneticlabeling(TRAP2),wedemonstratethatneuronalensemblesinthePLcortexaredynamic.PLneuronsTRAPedduringlatermemoryretrievalsaremorelikelytobereactivatedandmakelargerbehavioralcontributionstoremotememoryretrievalcomparedtothoseTRAPedduringlearningorearlymemoryretrieval.PLactivityduringlearningisrequiredtoinitiatethistime-dependentreorganizationinPLensemblesunderlyingmemoryretrieval.Finally,whileneuronsTRAPedduringearlierandlaterretrievalshavesimilarbroadprojectionsthroughoutthebrain,PLneuronsTRAPedlaterhaveastrongerfunctionalrecruitmentofcorticaltargets.
