VirtualMachineManager2022 IfyouhaveamediumtolargedeploymentofHyper-Vclusters,VMMisamustformanagement.SomewhatequivalenttovCenterintheVMwareworldthisistheserverproductthatletsyoumanagetemplatesforVMs,includingtemplateswithmultipleVMs(calledaservice)andotherartefactsaswellasautomateddeployments.VMMalsomanagesyourSoftwareDefinedNetworking(SDN)stackandyourbackendstorage(SANsandS2D).Notably,italsomanagesVMwarevirtualizationhostsandclustersandcanalsointegratewithAzureforlightVMmanagement. Onthenetworkingside,theSDNstackgetssupportfordual-stackIPv4andIPv6.You’llneedtobeusingtheSDNv2stackbutthat’sbeenwhereanynewfeatureshaveappearedsinceSystemCenter2016.Incaseyou’renotfamiliar,uptoSystemCenter2012R2/WindowsServer2012R2Microsoftbuilttheirownnetworkvirtualizationstackandprotocolbutin2016theyofferedVXLanfromVMwareasanalternative.TheyalsoswitchedtoanAzureinspiredarchitecturewherethere’sasetofNetworkControllerVMsrunningonyourcluster,managingallthevirtualizednetworks.TherearealsoSoftwareLoadBalancerVMsmanagingincomingnetworktraffic,plusaGatewayprovidingconnectivityfromavirtualizednetworktothewiderworld.Thedual-stacksupportcoversallofthesecomponents,includingsitetositeVPN(IPSec,GREtunnelandL3tunnels)soifyourdatacenterisadoptingIPv6–VMMisallreadytogo.Notethatyou’llneedtoprovidebothIPv4andIPv6addresspoolswhensettingthisup. VMMLogicalNetworkwithIPv4andIPv6subnets Theotherbig-ticketitemissupportforAzureStackHCI(version20H2and21H2)andWindowsServer2022.NotethatVMM2019UpdateRelease3(UR3)doesprovidesupportforAzureStackHCI20H2.IfyoumissedourWindowsServer2022webinarandhaven’theardofAzureStackHCIrealizethatit’sgotverylittletodowithAzure.ThisisaspecialversionofWindowsServerandHyper-VthatyouclusterontopofStorageSpacesDirect(S2D)whichyoucanthenmanagefromAzure.ThebenefitofAzureStackHCIisthatallthelatestfeaturesinWindowsServer(andHyper-V)arereleasedforit(unlike“normal”WindowsServer)andthedownsideisthatyoupayasubscriptionfeepercore,permonth,forit. YoucanaddexistingAzureStackHCIclusters,andyoucanalsocreatenewonesfromwithinVMM.YoucanmanagetheentireVMlifecycle,setupVLANbasednetworks,deploy/managetheSDNcontrollerandmanagestorage,creationofvirtualdisksandclustersharedvolumes(CSVs)andapplicationofstorageQoS.TherearenewPowerShellcmdletstohandleAzureStackHCI(Register-SCAzStackHCI). NotethatdisaggregatedAzureStackHCIclusters(forScaleOutFileServer,SOFS)aren’tsupported,norisLiveMigrationfromanAzureStackHCIclustertoaWindowsServercluster(althoughquickmigrationshouldwork). Iinstalledthe“earlypreview”onaWindowsServer2022VM,anditworksasadvertised,withnovisualdifferencesfromVMM2019. OperationsManager ApartfromVMM,IthinkSCOMisprobablythestrongestpartofSystemCenter.Thisvenerableproductkeepsaneyeoneverythinginyourvirtualizeddatacenter.UsingDell/HP/Lenovoservers?Justinstallthefreemanagementpackandyou’llgethardwaremonitoring,downtoindividualfansinyourservers.Thesamegoesforyournetworkingandstoragegear.Properlyconfigured,SCOMprovidesvisibilityintoyourentiredatacenterstack,fromphysicalhardwaretouser-facingapplicationcode. TherearetwonewRBACroles:Read-onlyAdministratorwhichdoeswhatitsaysonthetin,includingreporting.TheDelegatedAdministratorprofiledoesn’tincludereportviewingbutyoucancustomizeexactlywhatitshouldbeabletodobyaddingoneormoreof: Agentmanagement Accountmanagement ConnectorManagement Globalsettings Managementpackauthoring Notificationmanagement Operatorpermissions Reportingpermissions IfyouhavedisabledNTLMinyourorganization,SCOM2016/2019reportingservicesareimpacted,2022hasanewauthenticationtype(WindowsNegotiate)thatfixesthisissue. Aninterestingtwististheabilitytochoosethealertclosurebehavior,in2019youcan’tcloseanalertwhentheunderlyingmonitorisunhealthy,nowyoucanchoosetobeabletoclosethealertandresetthemonitorhealth,whichwillletyoubulkclosealerts.ThisbringsbackthebehaviorfromearlierversionsofSCOM.Alternatively,youcanchoosetostaywiththe2019behavior. ThereareimprovementstotheupgradeprocesswhereregistrykeysettingsandcustominstalllocationoftheMonitoringAgentismaintainedwhengoingfromSCOM2019to2022. AlertscannowbesenttoTeamschannels,insteadofSkypeforBusiness. SCOMcanalsomonitorAzureStackHCIdeployments,usinganewMP,whichisactuallyagroupingofcurrentManagementPacks(BaseOS,Cluster,Hyper-V,SDNandStorage). TherearealsosomeotherminorfixessuchasrunningtheSCOMdatabaseonSQLAlwaysOn(nopostconfigurationchangesrequired),SHA256encryptionforcertificatesfortheLinuxagent,theFQDNsourceofalertsisnowshownwhentuningManagementPacksandyoucanviewthealertsourceforactivealerts.NewerLinuxdistrossuchasUbuntu20,Debian10andOracleLinux8arealsonowsupportedformonitoring. ThedependencyontheLocalSystemaccountonManagementServershasbeenremovedandjustliketheotherSystemCentercomponents,SCOM2022runsonWindowsServer2022. DataProtectionManager ApartfromrunningonWindowsServer2022,thereareafewimprovementsinDPM.Themainone(dependingonyourrestorescenarios)isremovingtherequirementoffilecataloguemetadataforindividualfileandfolderrestoresandinsteadusesaniSCSIbasedapproachwhichimprovesbackuptimesandrestores. Ifyou’reusingDPMtoprotectVMwarevCenteryoucannowrestoreVMsinparallel,thedefaultvalueisupto8VMsimultaneouslybutyoucanupthatlimitwithasimpleregistrychange.SpeakingofvCenter,VMware7.0,6.7and6.5aresupportedandyoucannowseparatetheVDDKlogsthatrelatetoVMwareoperationsfromtherestoftheDPMlogsandstoretheminauser-definedfile. Another“big”improvementisthechangeofthemaximumdatastorageforaDPMserverfrom120TBto300TB.Asbefore,it’srecommendedtohavetieredstoragewithasmallamountofSSDcacheandtheresthard-drive-basedandusetheReFSfilesystem.
