Idon’tknowaboutyou,butforme,theseshiftshavebeeninvaluable.Icanhonestlysaythatmylifewouldnotbeclosetowhatitishadtheseshiftsnotoccurred. Itismyguessthatyoufeelsimilarly,andIwouldloveifyoucouldshareatleastonemeaningfulperspectiveshiftthatyouhaveexperiencedandhowvaluableithasbeentoyouinthecommentsbelow. Letmestartbysharingacoupleofmyownperspectiveshifts. Shift#1 Formuchofmylife,Iviewedmydifferentjobsasmyemployerpayingmeformytime.Withthisperspective,Iwouldshowuptoworkwhentheywantedmetoanddothework/accomplishthegoalsthattheywantedmetodo/accomplish.Generally,IthinkIdidagoodjob,butlookingbackwithanewperspective,Ihavetoacknowledgeitwaslimited. MyperspectiveshiftedwhenIstartedmyownbusinessandstartedhiringpeople.Fromthissideoftheemploymentrelationship,inmymind,Iwasn’t“payingthemfortheirtime.”Instead,hiringthemwasaninvestmentinmybusiness.Yes,Iwantedtheirtime,butmoreimportantly,Iwantedthemtoaddvaluetomybusiness.Infact,ifsomeoneIhireisn’taddingvaluetomybusiness,itisaclearsignIneedtocutties. Ihavenowtriedtotakethistoheartasanemployeeandconsultant.Insteadofseeingmyjobasatradefortime,Inowseeitasanopportunitytoaddvalue.Forme,thismeansthatIfeellikeIbringmoreheartandpurposetomyjob. Inmindsetspeak,thisisonewaythatIhaveseenashiftinmyselffromapreventionmindset(comfort-centered)toapromotionmindset(purpose-centered)thatallowsmetohaveagreaterimpactontheorganizationsIworkforandwith. Shift#2 Also,formuchofmylife,Iviewedothersasnotdoingthebesttheycan.Thismeantthatwhen: Ifeltsomeonewasunderperforming(e.g.,showeduplateforwork) Isawahomelesspersonaskingforassistance SomeonebehavedinawayIdidn’tagreewith(e.g.,haddifferentbeliefs) …Iwouldassumethattheyweren’tdoingtheirbestandshouldbedoingbetter.Inotherwords,Iwasquicktobecriticalofthem.TheresultofthiswasthatIwasquicktobejudgmental,insensitive,andcondescending. Idon’tthinkthisledmetodoanythingegregious,butnowthatIknowbetter,ithasledtotheheartacheofregretbecauseInowseehowIunnecessarilycausedpaininothersbecauseofmyjudgmentsandinsensitivity. AshiftinmyperspectivecamewhenIreadBrenéBrown’sbook,RisingStrong:HowtheAbilitytoResetTransformstheWayWeLive,Love,Parent,andLead. Iwriteaboutthisingreaterdetailhere,butinthisbook,sheinvitedmetotrytoseeothersasdoingthebestthattheycan. Thissmallshifthaschangedmylifeandeverysingleoneofmyrelationshipsandinteractions.Nowwhen Ifeelsomeoneisunderperforming(e.g.,showeduplateforwork) Iseeahomelesspersonaskingforassistance SomeonebehavinginawayIdidn’tagreewith(e.g.,haddifferentbeliefs) …Idon’tgetcriticalofthem,Igetcurious.Whatisgoingonorhasgoneonintheirlifetoleadtowheretheyarenow?Ininstanceslikethis,ratherthangetcriticallikeIusedto,Iammuchmoreinclinedtobecomeempathic,whichallowsmetolivemorecloselytomyidealself. Inmindsetspeak,thisrepresentsashiftfromaninwardmindsettoanoutwardmindsetthatallowsmetobemoreofmyidealself:someonewhohasapositiveinfluenceonothers. TheValueofPerspectiveShifts Again,ifyouhaveexperiencedperspectiveormindsetshifts,Iwouldloveitifyoucouldsharebelowinthecomments,andincludetheimpacttheshifthashadonyourlife.
