ESIData EssentialScienceIndicatorsissourcedfromtheScienceCitationIndex-Expanded(SCIE) andtheSocialSciencesCitationIndex(SSCI)inWebofScienceCoreCollection.  DocumentTypes: ESIanalyzes articlesand reviews fromSCIEandSSCIjournalstodeterminehowwellapaper,organization,etc.isperforming.  Letters,editorialmaterials,corrections,etc.aren’tregularlycitedand,therefore, aren’tincludedinESIcalculations. DepthofData: ESIdataconsistsofa10-yearrollingfile,whichincreaseswitheachbimonthlyupdate,accumulatingupto11years.After11fullyearsofdataareadded,thefirst yearisthendropped,settingthefilebacktoa10-yearperiod. InthecaseofMultidisciplinaryjournals,reclassificationisdoneatthepaperlevel,basedonananalysisofthecitedreferences.ThismeansthatpaperspublishedinjournalslikeScienceandNaturecouldbelongtofieldsthataremorespecificthan Multidisciplinary.  CitationCounts: OnlycitationsfromindexedjournalsintheScienceCitationIndexExpanded,SocialScienceCitationIndexandArts&HumanitiesCitationIndex,aretakenintoaccountforESIpurposes.Citationscomingfrombooks,conferenceproceedings,orjournalsindexedintheEmergingSourcesCitationIndexwillnotbeincludedinthecitationcountsforpapersorgroupsofpapers.  ESICitationThresholds InclusioninESIisdependentuponmeetingcertaincitationthresholds.Onlythemosthighlycitedindividuals,institutions,journals,countriesandpapersareincludedinESI.ThischartshowsthecitationthresholdsthatmustbemetinordertoappearinESI. Entity Percentile DataYears Researchers 1% 10 Institutions 1% 10 Countries 50% 10 Journals 50% 10 HighlyCitedPapers 1% 10 HotPapers 0.1% 2 HowtoReadThisTable: Thistableshowsyouthecitationperformancethreshold thatanentity'sresearchneedstomeetinorderforittoqualifyasHighlyCitedinafield.DataYearsreferstotheyearsexamined-10meansthatthefull ESIdatafileisconsidered.Percentilesareinverted,so1%meansthatanentityisperforminginthetop1% whencomparedtopeers.  Examples:TobeincludedasaHighlyCitedResearcherinChemistry,thetotalnumberofcitationstoaperson’sChemistryoutputmustbe inthetop1%whencomparedtoallotherresearchers,whohavepublishedChemistrypapersinthelast10years.Eachauthorlistedonapaperiscountedequally. HighlyCitedPapersarepapersthathavereceivedenoughcitationstoplacetheminthetop1% whencomparedtoallotherpaperspublishedinthesameyearinthesamefield,i.e.2008Physicspapersareonlycomparedtoother2008Physicspaperstodeterminewhethertheyhavebeencitedenoughtorankinthetop1%.  ForHotPapers,onlypaperspublishedinthelast2 yearsareconsidered.HotPapersarereceivingcitationsquicklyafterpublication. Thesepapershavebeencitedenoughtimesinthemostrecentbimonthlyperiodtoplacethem inthetop0.1%whencomparedtopeerpapers.PeerpapersarepapersthatwereaddedtoWoSCoreCollectionduringthesamebimonthlyupdateandbelongtothesamefield.
